MS12-009 Vulnerabilities in Ancillary Function Driver Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2645640) Windows XP Important 15-02-2012

Technical Information

Brief overview of the risk:
This security update resolves two privately reported vulnerabilities in Microsoft Windows. The vulnerabilities could allow elevation of privilege if an attacker logs on to a user’s system and runs a specially crafted application.
Detailed Information on the risk:

An elevation of privilege vulnerability exists where the Ancillary Function Driver (afd.sys) improperly validates input passed from user mode to the Windows kernel. The vulnerability could allow an attacker to run code with elevated privileges. A local attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could execute arbitrary code and take complete control of an affected system. The attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full administrative rights.
